News: Christina Milian - So Amazin' (Island Def Jam)
|
Christina Milian is a two time Grammy Award-nominated American singer and actress. She has had four solo top ten singles (and also a top ten featuring credit single) in the UK as well as hits in the rest of Europe and the U.S.
She has starred in the 2003 film Love Don't Cost a Thing opposite Nick Cannon. She has also starred as Linda Moon in Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty. She also had a starring position in the movie Pulse, due in theaters in July. In 2000, Milian performed vocals on Ja Rule's song Between Me and You from his album Rule 3:36. The song became a hit building her reputation as a singer. In 2001, Milian released her first solo single, "AM To PM", off her self-titled debut album. It became a worldwide hit reaching the top 5 in the UK and Denmark, top 10 in the Netherlands, and top 40 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
In 2003, Milian recorded songs for her first U.S. album, 'It's About Time', which is a reference to how long it had taken for one of her albums to be released in the U.S. The first single, "Dip It Low", was written by Teedra Moses and Poli Paul, who has also written songs for the Black Eyed Peas. The first single reached #1 on a world composite dance chart. The album debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200 and ended up with lackluster sales, selling 382,000 copies.
Her third album 'So Amazin' was released on May 16, 2006. The entire production was done by Cool & Dre, with additional help from Rich Harrison. The record's first single 'Say I' has been released in March as a single and video; it features Young Jeezy.
The single currently is on his latest mixtape, "Can't Ban the Snowman," and is having success within the mixtape scene causing many DJ's to place it on their compilations too ("Southern Smoke" for example). In December a song called "Who's Gonna Ride" has been giving to some DJs and caused to leaked to the internet. According to MTV, Christina recorded a track (Who's Gonna Ride) dissing her ex-boyfriend. It was due to the reason they broke up.
Recently the "Say I" video made it to number one BET's 106 & Park and the single is currently a Top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. In a recent radio interview she confirmed that her new single will be 'Gonna Tell Everybody'.
Christina Milian shed her teenybopper image (and a healthy amount of clothing) with her "Dip It Low" single back in 2004. Now on her third album, So Amazin', the petite Cuban-American singer sets out to prove she's a ride-or-die type of chick-albeit one prone to romantic fancies.
On the upbeat "Hot Boy," one of the album's highlights, Milian adopts a street-savvy persona, riding the piano synthesizer-heavy track, singing, "I'm a hot girl / In need of a hot boy / Hot, hot, hot boy." And there's definitely no shortage of sexual innuendo in songs like the bounce-heavy "My Lovin' Goes" and the lusty ballad "I'll Be Waiting."
Though So Amazin' is ripe with sexuality, it's also a surface-dwelling effort devoid of any profound insights. "Who's Gonna Ride,"rumored to be a dis track addressed to ex-boyfriend Nick Cannon, lacks the requisite venom and contempt of a woman scorned. Thankfully, Milian's voice is pleasant enough that, when combined with stellar production (i.e., Cool & Dre's soul- stirring violins on the lead single "Say I"), it makes up for songwriting shortcomings.
