News: Crooner Kev Says 'R&B Is Dead'

Crooner Kev Says 'R&B Is Dead'
"I'm tired of watered down R&B," said Atlanta crooner, Kev Samples, during a private industry listening session in New York on Thursday (August 24).

Samples, who claims R&B is dead, played tracks from his already buzzing mixtape, The Death Of R&B with G-Unit's DJ Whoo Kid, and from his forthcoming debut album, Screaming for More.

"I want to take [R&B] back to the days where people actually listened to the lyrics and could relate to the song instead of waiting for a catchy hook," Samples told BallerStatus.net.

Artists, label mates, publicists and journalists gathered in Chung King Studios, while the crooner played songs like "So Sick Of This Song," "U Need One Wish" and "I Ain't Gonna Leave," which were parodies jabbing at Ne-Yo, Ray-J and Trey Songs.

In addition to the tracks on his mixtape, new tracks from his forthcoming album were played, like "The Way She's Built," produced by Shay Taylor ( Ne-Yo's "When You're Mad"), the Red Spyda-produced "Naughty" featuring Petey Pablo, and the Scott Storch-produced "Off The Meter" featuring Lupe Fiasco.

Samples' album displayed a versatile range of production and collaborations (and didn't go overboard with the collaborations either). His dirty South roots were apparent, but not as nauseam. He even did an acapella for gathered listeners. And in case you're wondering, Samples is his real last name.

"That's my real name, but who would have known that Samples would be hot as a stage name," said the singer.

Screaming For More is expected to drop this fall on Outlandish Entertainment/Universal.
