News: Jay Z donates $30,000 to six NY/NJ schools
Six schools in the New York/New Jersey area will share a $30,000 donation from Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter as winners of a student essay-writing contest he launched in December along with Charlotte Bobcats owner Robert Johnson. More than 700 students took part in the competition, which required the young participants to write essays on why their school deserved to win the money.
"It was great to see the students' school spirit in their essays," Jay-Z said. "They showed they want a well-rounded education in a comfortable environment. I hope that these donations help them to achieve their goals."
The winning schools are Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development in Brooklyn, N.Y.; P.S. 89 in The Bronx; Liberty High School in Jersey City; Phifer Middle School in Pennsauken; Cedar Grove Memorial Middle School in Cedar Grove, and Health Professions & Human Services High School in Manhattan.
